They are very popular among hobbyists but any owner will tell you that they're not the easiest fish to care for. The first thing to consider when it comes to Discus fish care is the tank. It is always recommended to purchase a large tank to accommodate the increasing population of your Discus. You can also opt for a multi-tier tank so you can save some space. It is more cost-effective if you will buy one large tank instead of changing tanks when you need to upgrade to a larger space for your fish. If you have an air-conditioned room or during the winter, you need to have a heater to ensure proper regulation of the temperature at 28 degrees Celsius. Don't put your tank on direct sunlight. A Discus fish can live up to 10 years and they definitely need company. To avoid the confusion about the fish's markings or coloring, you can buy those that are already 4cm long. These fish are mature enough to indicate the future markings and coloring.

Another important thing with Discus fish care is keeping the water clean by changing it frequently. The Discus fish need daily change of water because of its tendency to release heavy wastes. In addition to that, leftover food can also contribute to the pollution of the water. When changing the water, you have to stand the bucket of water at least overnight to let the chlorine evaporate. You also have to give them good quality fish food. If possible, try to avoid live food to lessen if not totally eliminate the risk of disease from livestock. You can opt for dry or frozen food instead. You can also add powdered multivitamins to your fish's diet.
